Carter Wins Piney Lasky Memorial 100; Stephens Wins Supermodified
Debut
(Smithton, PA) The Fall Festival IV included crown-jewel events for
the MSA Supermodifieds and for the Subway Late Models.
Strongsville, Ohio resident Jimmy Carter won the Piney Lasky
Memorial 100 for his first Motordrome Speedway win. Trent
Stephens, the MSA Supermodified points leader won the inaugural
Supermodified at Motordrome and Bobby Shipp (Modifieds) and Shawn
Phillips (Street Stocks) also closed out the 2011 season in winning
style on Saturday September 10.
Thirty-three Subway Late Models took the green flag as The Piney
Lasky Memorial 100 began and Ohio s Jimmy Carter took the lead from
the pole starting position. Carter started up front by virtue of a
redraw for the top twelve qualifiers and 2011 Motordrome Champion
Barry Awtey started outside of row one. At the start, Bobby Henry
grabbed the second position from Awtey even though Henry s car was
damaged heavily in a crash the week prior. On lap seven, a heavy
rain shower soaked the speedway, and a delay of over hours halted
the action. As racing resumed, Carter, Henry, Henry s teammate
Garry Wiltrout led the field and remained a few car-lengths apart
weaving lapped traffic. Fastest qualifier Michael Pilla, of North
Carolina, made late races passes of defending race winner Colt
James, and Wiltrout to find himself in third place after starting
tenth. On lap 97, Pilla made contact with Henry while battling for
second place, and Henry spun collecting teammate Wiltrout. All
drivers would continue after the pair of former Champions brought
out the caution on the backstretch. Nathan Russell, who started
ninth, took over second position, and althouth the young driver held
off Awtey, he was not able to challenge Carter. Carter, of
Strongsville, Ohio, took the checkered flag for his first win at
Motordrome without a serious challenge collecting every penny of the
lap leader bonus money. We had a real fast hot rod this week .
REAL fast, Carter reflected in victory lane. This is probably the
biggest race I ve won, said the former Main Event Outlaw Late
Model Champion. Russell, and Awtey placed second and third. The
Bethlehem Bullet Matt Barndt started eleventh and placed fourth
with previous week s winner Sam Fullone completing the top five.
The Modifieds competed in a 40-lap finale, and fastest qualifier
Bobby Shipp took the lead early in the race. The former Charger
Champion had one win during the regular season, in which he raced
only occasionally. It was a dominating performance for the veteran
driver, who held off defending Motordrome Champ Chris Brink. Brink
had a few opportunities to challenge for a win after double-file
restarts but settled for second place. Six time Champ Adam
Kostelnik earned the third position at the finish, after winning the
previous Friday night event. Shipp s younger brother, Bryan placed
fourth after clinching the 2011 Modified Championship the week
prior. Reigning ARCA National Truck Champion Chris Bailey, Jr.
completed the top five.
After Matt Sever set the fastest time in qualifying for the Street
Stocks 40-lap feature, Shawn Phillips grabbed the lead after
starting outside of row number one. Fourth starting Sever assumed
second place on lap one, and the lead duo set a quick pace until lap
25. On a lap 25, after a caution flag for debris Sever took the
lead on the restart, and put a few car lengths between himself and
Phillips. On lap 34, Phillips made the winning pass of Sever, and
soon after Sever s right front tire went flat. Phillips, the 2011
Street Stock Champion, went on to win the Fall Festival race for the
second time in his career. Scott Aiello, a winner this season
finshed second with Christopher Knight (making his first start in
the division this year) placing an impressive third. Rookie Mike
Carlson finished fourth and Sever held on for fifth with no right
front tire.
