ACTION

FRANKLIN, PA ... After rain wiped away Saturday night's racing action, race fans and teams returned to Tri-City Speedway on Sunday night for the Armstrong Cable Oil Region Labor Day Classic Weekend finale under sunny skies, as Darrell Lanigan of Union, Kentucky, captured the World of Outlaws Late Model Series 50-lap feature and the $10,000 top prize. World of Outlaws Media Director Kevin Kovac will issue a separate story about that event. In other action, Danny Holtgraver of Pittsburgh, Pa., captured the 25-lap DIRTcar Challenge Sprint Series event for the Cranberry Pennzoil 10 Minute Oil Change Super Sprints. Joining Lanigan and Holtgraver on the list of weekend winners were Bud Watson of Conneaut, Ohio, in the 25-lap FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series event for the 4 Your Car Connection FASTRAK Late Models, and Brent Rhebergen of Clymer, N.Y., in the 25-lap United E Mod Series special for the Welding Technologies/Shaw Industries E Mods. Danny Holtgraver came of age in Super Sprint competition this season with a Lernerville Speedway track championship and multiple feature wins. On Sunday night, he finally captured his first career win at Tri-City Speedway holding off former track champions Bob Felmlee and Rod George to win the 25-lap DIRTcar Challenge Sprint Series event paying $2,000-to-win. "It's just awesome to run this well here and beat these guys," said Holtgraver in victory lane beside his Kargo Quality Cars & Trucks/Bastin's Truck Parts J&J No. D4. "I've had trouble getting a hold of slick tracks over the years, but the car worked well tonight." Holtgraver and George started on the front row, and Holtgraver blasted out front at the green flag. The first 22 laps went caution free, and Holtgraver kept a fast pace ahead of the veterans. With Holtgraver and George out front, Felmlee drove to third by the sixth circuit. Those three were the class of the field through lapped traffic. George made an effort to get by Holtgraver with less than 10 laps to go as he raced to the low side of the leader. However, Holtgraver pinched off George's line, and held onto the lead. Following the lone caution for a spin, Holtgraver raced home to the checkered flag. Felmlee sprinted by George for second on the restart, but had no power to catch Holtgraver. At the line, Holtgraver won over Felmlee, George, Ed Lynch Jr., and Brian Ellenberger. Ellenberger and Felmlee won the Super Sprint heat races. Recently, David Scott informed John and Janet Powell that he would no longer be able to drive the Powells' Bullitt No. 100. He recommended that they contact 17-year-old driving sensation Bud Watson. The Powells took the advice, and Watson promptly put their car into victory lane at Tri-City in the 25-lap FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series. It was the Powells second series win of the season at Tri-City. Scott won the series race in July. "This is a match made in heaven," said Watson with a big smile in victory lane after his first career win at Tri-City. "I am proud to drive this car, and I have to thank my parents and the Powells for everything they have done for me. This is awesome to be in victory lane. Racing Kyle (Lukon) at the end, I knew that he was in a good position on the outside, and I had to make a charge at the end. We touched a little, but rubbing's racing." Gary Knollinger led the first two laps of the race before Watson took command following a restart with a three-wide pass at the start-finish line. Knollinger and Lukon battled for second for the next 10 circuits before Lukon secured the position on the 13th lap. Lukon could not catch the fast moving Watson, who opened a huge advantage over the field. Following a caution on the 24th circuit, a green-checkered finish was Lukons best hope for victory. On the final circuit, Lukon edged ahead of Watson off turn two, but Watson charged into the final corners and rubbed Lukon a little off turn four. With Watson on the inside, he beat Lukon to the line. Max Blair finished third followed by Dan Angelicchio and Butch Lambert. Josh Holtgraver, Jim Frank and Watson won the FASTRAK Late Model heats. Jamie Brown captured the B main. Brent Rhebergen of Clymer, N.Y., led flag-to-flag in the 25-lap United E Mod Series (UEMS) feature to capture his first win of the 2010 season. Driving Terry Suppa's CarGo Auto Parts Pierce No. 4S, Rhebergen won his 48th career E Mod feature at Tri-City. "I want to thank everyone for their efforts on this team," said Rhebergen. "Winning one of these races is a big deal, especially with all of the cars here tonight." When the green flag dropped, Rhebergen assumed command over Jeff Johnson. Rhebergen was so dominant that he led by over four seconds at one point. Behind him Johnson fought off Evan Taylor for the first half of the race before E Mod star Randy Hall raced by Taylor into third on the 12th lap. With five laps to go, a crash in turn two slowed the pace. On the restart, Hall was able to get past Johnson for second, but Rhebergen was already several car lengths ahead. Hall had one more chance on the final circuit after a multi-car tangle heading into turn one. Following the final restart, Rhebergen held off Hall for the win. Johnson finished third over Taylor and Mike Knight. Knight, Rhebergen, Kari Gasser and Jonathan Taylor won the E Mod heats for the 40-car field. Jack Young and Dan Davies won the B mains. Track management and World of Outlaws Late Model Series officials elected not to utilize the Monday raindate for Saturday's show. Thus, the 2010 Oil Region Labor Day Classic Weekend ended with Sunday's events. Tri-City Speedway will host its final show of the 2010 racing season on Sunday September 12th with the running of the 14th Annual CSTechnologies Plus Applefest 100. This year's event will feature Twin 50s for the E Mods and Pro Stocks. Each feature race will be 50 laps paying $1,500-to-win plus additional lap money and other prizes. In addition, the Thundercars will return for the Apple Core 20 while the Mini Stocks compete in the Apple Seed 15. Gates open at 2 p.m. and racing starts at 4 p.m.
