Tim Kelly Conquers ASCS Sprints at Eriez Speedway! Morell and Eckman get first wins, Fenno, Burgess, Hebner, and Slaney continue their domination.

Hammet, PA (September 5, 2010): The ASCS Patriot Sprints made their second appearance of the season at Eriez with 20 cars making the long tow for the Central New York State based series.  Tim Kelly, who last won at Eriez in 1999, started from the pole and led every lap enroute to the win.  In the regular classes Jason Morell got his first-ever feature win in the Super Late Models and Dustin Eckman got his first got his first-ever in the E-Mods.  Greg Fenno got his sixth feature of the year, Wade Slaney went to Victory Lane for the fourth time, Josh Hebner for the eighth, and incredibly, Ben Burgess Jr won his tenth feature of the season in 13 appearances.

After three heats and a dash set the starting field for the ASCS Patriot Sprints, the top positions were set by redraw with Tim Kelly drawing the pole position and points winner Bryan Howland on the outside of row one.  Kelly grabbed the early lead with Howland second.  Early in the event it was Dylan Swiernik coming from his ninth place on the starting grid to third by lap seven, only to come to a halt with mechanical problems a lap later.  Bubba Broderick, the winner when the Patriots last visited Eriez in May, advanced to the third position and was gaining on the leaders, using the extreme high line.  At lap 20 Broderick threw the right rear wheel going into turn three after clipping the wall, halting his attempt to sweep the events at Eriez in 2010.  With Broderick’s misfortune, Bryan Howland wins the King of Ohio-Pennsylvania Challenge.  For the final five lap run to the checkers, Kelly was perfect with Blake Breen second, Jared Zimbardi third, Bryan Howland fourth, and Kyle Moffitt fifth.

Andy Boozel, with a win earlier season, started from the pole position for the Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Model feature with Ward Schell to his right.  Boozel shot into the lead at the start with Scott Johnson coming to second before one lap was completed.  Boozel and Johnson raced for the lead over the next several laps with the rest of the field falling behind.  By halfway, the two leaders had a quarter lap lead over Schell, running third, Darrell Bossard, and Jason Morell.  Morell got by Bossard at lap 17 and at lap 20 Johnson got by Boozel for the lead when they tried to put Ron Bem a lap down,  Morell got by Schell for third just as caution flew for double spin by Dave Lyon and Andy Kania.  After the restart Johnson appeared to have problems coming to speed, losing the lead back to Boozel, who then lost it to Jason Morell with three laps remaining.  Morell went on to his first-ever Super Late Model feature win over Boozel, Bossard, Bruce Hordusky, and Johnson.

Joe Weber started the Plyler Overhead Door E-Mod feature from the outside of the front row and led the first two laps, giving way to Dustin Eckman who started in row two at lap three, when caution was shown for a minor spin at the end of lap three.  Sixth starting Ron Seeley came to second at lap nine and began closing in on Eckman, getting to within a car-length at the finish.  Eckman won his first-ever E-Mod feature, having run in the division seven years.  Seeley settled for second with Weber third, Leonard Enos fourth, and Jason Illig fifth.

2010 point’s champion Wade Slaney started on the pole of the Route 8 Boardwalk Bar and Grill Limited Late Model feature with Chad Carlson alongside.  Slaney took off to the immediate lead with Carlson second until Slaney got sideways in turn four on lap three forcing Carlson into the infield but both were able to right their mounts and continue.  The race ran green with Steve “Kid” Kania running second and Chris McGuire third until lap six when Bobby Rohrer, the 2009 champion, came to a halt on the front straight. By the time of the next caution, for a spin at the halfway point, the running order of the top three was the same as the point’s finish, Slaney, Kania, and Chris Ottaway.  Each of the three had three wins during the regular season.  After a restart at lap 15, Chad Carlson came to second. The final yellow came at lap 17 with the order back to Slaney, Kania, and Ottaway.  That was the finishing order with Carlson and Tyler Green filling out the top five.

Clint Haskins and Wade Watson led the Hunter Trucking Sportsman to Spanky Hall’s green flag with Watson opening a big lead in the first three laps, at which point Ben Burgess Jr came to second.  One lap later, Burgess had erased Watson’s advantage and gone by for the lead.  John Boardman spun at lap five, causing the race’s first caution.  He had to be towed from the track, but was able to effect repairs, returned to track without losing a lap, and finished fourth.  Burgess went on to his tenth win of the season over Joey Buccola and Jake Eller.

The Mill Run Collision Street Stocks started with Rush Firestone and Matt Lozowski on the front row. Firestone sped to the lead but four cars piled up coming out of turn two, including Brad Pease, Paul Schreckengost, Mark Thompson, and Terry White, who triggered the mess when he got sideways coming out of turn two.  When the race went green again it was Firestone with the lead over Lozowski and Brian Bush.  At the restart from the next caution it was Greg Fenno coming to second. By lap five Fenno was running next to Firestone, using the high line, assuming the point at lap eight.  Fenno cruised to the win over Firestone, Bush, Lozowski, and season champion Chris Withers.  It was the sixth win of the season for Fenno at Eriez.

Don Hebner started on the pole for the Summit Auto Auction Challenger feature with Wesley Stull outside.  Josh Hebner came to the lead by the end of lap one and was never challenged.  He won, going away, over Don Hebner and Kyle Jackson.
