In this fan's eyes, the most exciting form of dirt-track racing is the fire-breathing sideway racing USAC Wingless Sprinters. With the tour being centered in Indiana I don't get to see them much so I jumped at the chance when they came to Lernerville Speedway for a $6000 to win 40-lapper. It was great racing even though the winner, Jon Stanbrough, started on the pole and led every lap on a rather dry (amazing considering the recent rainy season) and somewhat dusty dry-slick surface, Below are some of my favorite shots.
The first heat lines up with Fortville, IN's Jonathan Hendrick on the point.
Coming into turn three on the first racing lap of the first heat pole-sitter Hendrick (68) and Lincoln, IN's Dave Darland (21x) made wheel contact with Hendrick getting airborne rear first.
Darland brakes as Hendrick begins a series of flips.
Hendrick heads to the edge of the track.
Hendrick continues his exit from the racing surface while Darland and Noblesville, IN's Bryan Clauson get by on the low side.
Hendrick heads for his landing after a rough flight. He was uninjured.
Keith Bloom Jr, Anderson, CA
Bryan Clausen, Noblesville, IN, "backs it into turn three with the right rear tie showing the heat of the action. Clauson won a feature in Ocala, FL in February.
Fast qualifier was Olney, IL's Levi Jones. Jones went on to win the first heat and wound up 4th in the feature.
Lewisberry, PA's Kyle Moody.
The #11, unknown at this time, leads Tempe, AZ's Casey Shuman into turn three. Shuman finished 10th in the A-Main.
Robert Ballou, Rocklin, CA, finished 5th in the A-Main.
Canton, IL's Chris Windom leads Fleetwood, PA's J R Berry. Windom, the winner at Bloomington, IL on May 20, collected a third place finish at Lernerville.
Sikeston, MO's Hunter Schuerenberg wound up eighth but had won earlier this season at Gas City I-69 Speedway.
Local up and coming driver Pete Miller III got loose in turn four and nearly went over the edge.
Pete Miller III again, from Port Vue, PA, in his first-ever wingless race, looped it during preliminary action.
Miller was able to keep it headed in the right direction much of the time.
Tracy Hines, New Castle, IN, leads Forney, TX Travis Rilat.
Daron Clayton, Sikeston, MO
Hunter Schuerenberg and Binghamton, NY's Coleman Gulick in turn three. Gulick was second in the A-Main.
Columbus, IN's J J Hughes lifts the left front in turn three.
USAC's only two-time winner thus far in 2011 is Concord, CA's Damion Gardner with both wins coming at Ocala. Gardner won his heat but struggled in the feature and was not able to crack the top ten.
Blake Fitzpatrick, West Terre Haute, IN.
Levi Jones, fast qualifier.
Jon Stanbrough emerges victorious after leading all 40 laps for his first feature win this season with the USAC Sprints. Stanbrough also won his heat.
A happy Stanbrough is joined in Victory Lane by Ms Firecracker.
