Burley on Track at Ransomville
By Dave
Sully
(Ransomville, NY) Todd Burley from
Spencerport has won the last two Ransomville modified championships
and has every intention of making it three. He took a big step in
that direction on Friday, May 30th, when he cruised to
his first win of the season at the Big R, methodically moving to the
front from his eleventh place starting spot to take the lead on lap
fifteen of the thirty lap event.
After Sam Crogan took the point on lap
three, it became obvious that Burley was on a mission, as he claimed
third after only five laps. Rich Vinson took the lead for several
laps before Crogan reclaimed it on lap eleven. Burley grabbed
second on lap thirteen and then stalked Crogan for two laps before
steaming by outside on the backstretch to take over the top spot.
From there he hit his marks perfectly to take the win, Crogan
crossed the line second, but was banished to the rear for a tech
violation.
Jeff McGinnis, Vinson, Scott Kerwin, and
Chad Brachmann ended up completing the top five in the final
accounting. Burley noted, “We were good. The bottom was real good
early, and then it seemed to go away. Then we just rolled around
the top and used momentum. It was the right place at the right
time.”
The twenty-five lap sportsman feature
had an inauspicious start as rookie Amos Andrews flipped his car
three times after hitting the fourth turn wall, ending up in the
infamous Ransomville moat. That incident collected two other cars,
and along with a five car scrum moments earlier in turn three, eight
cars were eliminated from the twenty-six car starting field.
When the race got started in earnest,
former pro stock driver James Henry, from Niagara Falls, prevailed
in a two car battle with fellow former pro stocker, Steve Miller.
Miller looked to be headed to his first ever sportsman victory,
after taking the lead on lap eleven, but Henry dogged him until lap
twenty-three when Miller drifted wide in turn four. Henry seized
the opportunity and dove under him to take the lead and the first
sportsman win of his career.
Miller settled for second, followed by
Tyler McPherson, Mike Bowman, and
Tony Purgarich.
The two fifteen lap street stock
features went to veteran Alex Morris from Niagara Falls, who held
off Chris Burek, and Scott Krull, from Ransomville, who crossed the
line second, but got the win when Don Rappleyea, who took the
checkered flag, was DQd. for a weight violation.
