Steve Hulsizer wins at Fulton
Fulton, NY - By Fulton PR - Steve Hulsizer
used patience Saturday night as he regained the lead he had early on,
driving by Mike Bowman on lap-17, and from there never looked back
winning the 35-lap DIRTcar Big Block Modified feature. The race was only
slowed by one caution.
Other winners on the night were, John Pietrowicz in the 20-lap DIRTcar
Crate Sportsman Modifieds. The UMP Street Stocks ran a pair of 20-lap
features with Ron Hawker and Dave Mannise grabbing the wins. John Wilbur
picked up his second win of the year in the 15-lap E&V Energy Rookie
Crate Sportsman Modifieds and Jon Shumway picked up yet another win in
the Four Cylinder Enduros.
Chad Phelps out raced Dave Reilley to grab the lead in the Modified
feature. On lap-4 using the extreme bottom Steve Hulsizer blasted by
Phelps and quickly built up a lead on the rest of the field.
When lap-8 went in the books the only yellow of the race flew for Roy
Bresnahan tightening up the pack.
Mike Bowman used his momentum to blast by Hulsizer and take command of
the race. From there a great three car battle for the top spot took
shape between Bowman, Hulsizer, Jim Witko and Tom Sears Jr.
The top three not only raced each other but also battled lap traffic. On
lap-17 Hulsizer saw an opening on the bottom and was able to drive by
Bowman to grab the top spot. From there Hulsizer used lapped traffic to
open up a comfortable lead he would never give up to grab the victory.
On the last lap Tom Sears Jr. Was able to trap Jim Witko behind a lapped
car to grab the runner-up spot. Witko, Alan Johnson and Danny Johnson
completed the top five.
After the feature Danny Johnson came up light on the scales giving fifth
to Jimmy Phelps.
Hulsizer parked his Thompson Road Tavern, No.88, Troyer in Victory lane
for the first time at the speedway since 1997. " The bottom is the place
to be here, the top usually goes away," said Hulsizer talking about how
he lost the lead early and got it back at the midway point. "You watch
guys like Alan,(Johnson) here that is where they run to get wins."
John Pietrowicz jumped from his front row starting spot to grab the lead
and went on to the easy win in the green to checkers 20-lap DIRTcar
Crate Sportsman Modified feature. Gregg Carner, Matt Hulsizer, Jeremy
Pitcher and Billy Clark Jr. Chased Pietrowicz across the line.
The driver of the Gypsum Express, No.85 had a shot at victory erased the
week before with one lap to go. Pietrowicz was going for the lead when
he hit the yuke tire taking out his front end. All that was forgotten
when he picked up his first ever, Fulton Sportsman win.
"I have to thank Larry Wight and the whole Gypsum team," said Pietrowicz.
"We have been trying some different things and it?s really starting to
pay off."
"The thrill of Victory and the Agony of defeat," was the saying from
Wide World Of Sports. That saying could of applied to UMP Street Stock
driver Steve Crouse. Crouse thought he had a pair of 20-lap feature wins
on the night. After a post race inspection there was a rules infraction
on the NO.02 disqualifying him from both victories.
Dave Mannise and Ron Hawker were awarded the wins. For Mannise it was
his third win of the year.
John Wilbur racing one of the Reakes Racing No.17 picked up his second
win of the year in the 15-lap E&V Energy Rookie Crate Sportsman
Modifieds. Doug Cook, Claude Hutchings Jr., Scott Fowler and Chris
Pullen completed the top five.
"I can?t thanks the Reakes family enough for this. I never thought I
would be able to do this," said Wilbur. "They trusted me with a car,
hauler, truck and keys to their house, not many people would do that."
