Collings Collects Career First at WCIS: Jankowiak, Catalano, Eck Also Win

By: Steven Petty

PERRY, NY… The staff and management of Wyoming County International Speedway decided to go ahead with Farm Days at the Bullring. The decision was a very good one as the cars and the stars came out for Double Points Mid Season Championship  night as part of Farm Days. The racing action saw a first time visitor grace victory lane plus return visits from some drivers as well.

Brad Collings has had motor issues and all kinds of bad luck over the past couple of seasons behind the wheel of his Super Stock. This night, something went right as Collings would pick up his very first win in the SST Super Stocks as a tune-up for the Jim Roberts Memorial next Friday night. Brad Collings and Austyn Fugle would lead the competitive field of Super Stocks to the start of their 25 lap feature event and it was the Collings machine up front and leading the first lap. Collings would continue to be the leader but contact between last week’s feature winner Mike Chenaille and Tim Garlock at the midway mark of event caused the first yellow of the night. On the restart, Phil Alhart Jr. was on the back bumper of the race leader Collings and was unable to get around the X-Cel Wireless, Perry Bowling Center entry of Brad Collings. Chenaille would lose the handle of his car in turn two to bring out the second caution of the event and set up a four lap dash for the cash and the win. Collings would then take the lead off of the restart and pick up his very first career victory in the Super Stocks. Austyn Fugle would take the runner up spot after contact was made on the last lap between Phil Alhart Jr and Jason Deiter on the last lap. Cassie Logsdon would round out the top three after getting around Deiter and Alhart Jr. to pick up another third place finish for the former feature winner.

Greg Utberg and Lexi Wilson shared the front row for the start of the 35 lap feature for the SST Modifieds and it was Utberg getting the early advantage. Ed Schueler got loose and lost the handle of his machine down the back stretch to cause the first yellow of the night. The restart saw Amy Catalano take over at the point with Andy Jankowiak running right behind the defending SST Series Champion Catalano. Amy and Andy J were being followed by Patrick Emerling and the top three had a good distance over the rest of the field but another yellow would bunch the field back together. The following restart saw Jankowiak take over the lead from Catalano and Emerling tried to do the same maneuver that Jankowiak did but was unsuccessful. Andy J would get out and pull away as Catalano and Emerling were fighting it out for the second position. Contact between Greg Utberg and Jim Ling caused the yellow lights to be displayed and the lead that Andy J had on the field was erased. Jankowiak was able to regain his big lead and pull away and was able to pick up another feature win in the SST Modifieds. Late race contact between Emerling and Catalano saw Catalano end up in the wet grass in the infield after not being able to get the car re-fired as Emerling was able to pick up the number two spot. Officials deemed that it was accessive driving and allowed Amy Catalano to keep the position that she was running in at the time of the incident, which was second. So with Andy J picking up another win, Catalano was placed second and heat race winner Lexi Wilson would round out the top three.

Can anyone stop the Rocket? Tommy Catalano picked up the lead early and led the remaining laps to pick up another win to put him in “7th Heaven” as it was his seventh on the season. Daniel Majchrzak and Kevin Grom were up front for the start of the 20 lap main event for the 4 cylinder stocks in their Mid Season Championship event. Kevin Grom took over the lead at the point to lead the first go around. Grom continued to lead but by the second lap, Catalano took over at the point in his Catalano Motorsports, Cam’s NY Pizzeria, PJ Radiator machine. Once up front, Catalano pulled away from the rest of the field and worked his way through lap traffic. A late race caution set up a Green, White, Checkered shootout for the field and it was Tommy Catalano picking up his seventh win on the season.

Kennedy White and Jason Eck led the short but competitive field of  Mini Cups to the green flag and it was Jason Eck taking over the lead. Eck and Rob Micoli were side by side for most of the event and those two were the stars of the race. Eck and Micoli were trading paint and as the saying goes, “rubbin’s racing” as Eck would beat out Micoli at the line and Kennedy White rounded out the top three.

Next week is the Jim Roberts Memorial 50 for the Super/Street Stocks. This race is in tribute to former track welder Jim Roberts who passed away late last season. The race is This event will also be a Race of Champions Qualifier for the Supers as well as the Street Stocks. The SST Modifieds, 4 cylinder stocks and Mini Cups will also be on the racing card which will get underway at 7:30. The gates will open at 5:00 pm.  Next week is also Reunion Night as WCIS is inviting all the former drivers that competed at Bullring whether it being on the dirt or the asphalt to come out for the racing program.
