Jeremy Miller wins the race down the
Supernational Road at Roaring Knob for UFo Race Championship!
Markleysburg, PA (July 17) Jeremy Miller from
Gettysburg, PA was the winner of the Supernational Road 40 on Saturday
night at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex, earning $3,000 for his
efforts.
There were 30 cars checked in for competition, and four qualifying heats
were run. Mel Minnick was the winner of Heat 1, as the first three heats
were won from second starting position. Chuck Harper and Keith Jackson
were the winners of Heats 2 and 3. Tommy Beck won Heat 4, from the pole
position. John Mollick was the B-Main winner, setting a field of 24 cars
for the main event.
First heat winner Mel Minnick drew for each driver for the top 12
starting spots. After pulling ninth starting spot for himself, the front
row positions dropped well down in the draw. Keith Barbara was ninth in
line to get his starting position, and wound up with the pole. Alex
Ferree was the eleventh driver to get his spot, and he gladly accepted
the two to set the front row for the Supernational Road 40.
Barbara led the field into turn one at the drop of the green, as Ferree
slipped up the track. Third starting D.J.Myers was quick to move, as
raced his way into the lead on lap 1 over Barbara, Ferree, Ron Delano,
and Keith Jackson. Sixth starting Jeremy Miller was also on the move
early, as he advanced to fourth on lap 2. By lap 4, Miller had continued
his march up to second ahead of Barbara, Ferree, and Delano. The first
caution of the event came on lap 4.
Myers chose the inside lane for the double file restart, and the two
drivers raced side-by-side through lap 5 with Myers ahead by a nose on
the inside. Miller cleared Myers to take the lead on lap 6 with Ferree,
Jamie Lathroum, and Barbara in tow. Lathroum took third from Ferree, and
Jared Miley passed Barbara for fifth just prior to the second caution
with 9 laps complete. Miller took the outside on this restart, and
continued to show the way. On lap 11, Lathroum took second from Myers,
as the yellow appeared again.
Miller continued to lead on this restart from the outside lane over
Lathroum, with Miley taking third from Myers through restarts on laps 14
and 15. Jared Hawkins had started 16th on the grid, and had advanced to
fifth. Racing settled down at this point, as again it was Miller showing
the way over Lathroum, Miley, Myers, and Hawkins. Hawkins took fourth
from Myers on lap 18, and at halfway Minnick entered the top five.
Lap 26 was the final caution period of the event, with Miller continuing
to lead from the outside lane on the restart. He built a comfortable
margin over Lathroum and Miley, but both drivers pulled up to the
leader's back bumper in the closing laps. Miller held on to take the
win. Lathroum's only chance to try to pass was a peek inside in turn two
on lap 38, but was four car lengths back at the checkered flag. Miley
was just behind Lathroum in finishing third. In his run from 16th to
finish fourth, Hawkins was the Pass-Maximum award winner, presented by
Bernheisel Race Components and Lazer Chassis, for advancing 12
positions. Keith Jackson was fifth, as Minnick, Barbara, Ferree, L.C.
Powers, and Doug Horton completed the top ten.
Chad McClellan, in a borrowed car tonight, continues to lead the point
standings for the UFo Race Championship. His lead is 17 points over John
Mollick. Keith Barbara is third, ahead of Tommy Beck and Danny Mitchell.
Jim Kutas, Jared Miley, Doug Horton, D.J. Myers, and Jared Hawkins round
out the top ten in points.
