Black, Sever, Keller Win For Second Time; Shipp
and Quarrick Nab First Wins of 2010 (Smithton, PA) For the second time in his career, Greensburg’s Steve Black celebrated in victory lane, after winning the NASCAR Subway Super Late Model feature at Motordrome Speedway on July 2, 2010. Bryan Shipp won his first Wyotech Modified feature of the year, while Matt Sever, a rookie in the Napa Street Stocks, also won for the second time in his career. Denny Keller won his second Pro Auto Supply Service Chargers main event of the season, and Cody Quarrick won his first Coca Cola Super Compact race in over two years. At the wave of the green flag to start the 50-lap NASCAR Subway Super Late Model feature, veteran Steve Black leaped into the lead from his front row starting spot. Fourth starting Mark Poole, a winner in 2010, battled for second in the early stages of the event with pole-starter Dan Lewis. On lap seven, fifth place starter Garry Wiltrout advanced to third spot, after swapping fourth and fifth position repeatedly with his teammate Bobby Henry. By lap eleven, Wiltrout and Henry were in second and third positions, while Black put a tremendous distance between himself and the rest of the pack. Tenth place starter Mark Cottone pursued Wiltrout and Henry, and the three former Motordrome Champions raced side by side and occasionally three wide for the remainder of the event, to the fans delight. But all the excitement was the battle for second, as Black guided his Black Mountain Enterprises/Baker Race Cars and Performance Toyota to his second career win (and second in three weeks) by largest margin of victory of the year. Nearly a half-lap behind Black, Wiltrout just barely held off Henry to place second. Henry was third and the previous week’s winner of The Steel City 100, Cottone, was fourth. Barry Awtey was fifth. Black and Henry won the heat races. Bryan Shipp graduated from the Charger division a few years ago, and became a Wyotech Modified winner for the first time in 2009, following in his older brother’s footsteps. In 2010, Shipp struggled with bad luck and even an accident while battling for a win. But after starting on the front row, Shipp grabbed the early lead from Bill Hribar and paced the field for 14 of the 25 laps in the feature event. On a restart, Shipp lost the lead to semi-retired Bobby Bentz, who was making only his third start of the year. Bentz’s ride was fast, but his lead lasted only three laps, until Shipp was back in front of the field. Bentz stayed within striking distance of Shipp, and even had a last lap restart to try for another “hole shot.” But, at the finish line, Shipp ended his year-long frustration with a victory over Bentz, three time winner Chris Brink in third, rookie Pat Hanley who started twelfth, and Adam Kostelnik who battled back into the top five after a spin on lap 17. Gary Scott and J.P. Weiser won the preliminaries. In the Napa Street Stock division, Jason Holder is in the midst of a shocking winless drought. With a resume loaded with victories at two different tracks, Holder started on the pole for the 25-lap feature. Holder led ten laps, adding to what may be a division leading total of feature laps led this year. But, fourth place starter Matt Sever wrestled the lead from the veteran on lap eleven. Sever, who graduated high school two weeks prior, was the 2009 Champion of the Super Compacts and became a two-time winner in his freshman year of Street Stock racing, holding off Dink Colarusso at the checkered flag. Behind defending Champion Colarusso in third place was current points leader Scott Aiello, while Holder placed fourth. After a terrible crash early in 2010, Jeff Zillweger finished in the top five, in his third start since major repairs. Colarusso and Teddy Gibala won the heat races. Veteran Denny Keller was lightning fast all night in the Pro Auto Supply Service Chargers, and after dominating his heat race Keller started ninth in the 15-lap feature. Ed Shelpman took the early lead over front row starting mate Jon Scott. But on lap four, Keller roared into the lead in spite of his fifth row starting berth. Behind Keller, the action was furious with three drivers swapping top five spots. When the checkered flag waved, Keller scored his second win of the year, with points leader Zane Ferrell second after starting tenth. A.J. Poljak started eighth and placed third with heat winner Ed McConnell fourth. Previous week’s winner Ron Eiford, III was fifth. Cody Quarrick returned to his racing roots in the Coca Cola Super Compact division. The Subway Super Late Model driver has been out of action with his NASCAR ride for a few weeks, but recently won as a car owner in the Compacts. As a driver, he made his first start a winning one, capturing a heat and feature victory. Quarrick started sixteenth and became the third different leader on lap eleven of the 15-lap contest. Previous week’s winner Andrew Dutkewycz placed second after starting 21st, with Eugene “Hillbilly” Zerfoss trailing him in third place at the finish. Fourth was Paul Koffler, Jr. and fifth was young Stephen Shelpman who led four laps. Bill Schwartz, and Kyle Kominarski also won heat races.
