Reed Wins Wild One at Attica; Foos Picks Up FAST305 Win

ATTICA, OH (7-2-10) by Bryan Autullo - FAST Public Relations

Attrition was the name of the game at Attica Raceway Park as the Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series returned to action on Friday night. The top 6 starters in the main event all encountered some sort of problem with mechanical failure or a crash. It was Byron Reed who was camped out in 7th place who was the benefactor of all the mayhem that happened in front of him. Reed was also a victim of mechanical issues as he lost his brakes on lap 12. He was able to hold on, and eventually drive away from the rest of the field.

“Things were going our way tonight. On the 12th lap I lost my brakes so I couldn’t really drive very aggressively. I was just lucky those guys (Sebetto and Gressman) bounced away from me because there was no way I was going to miss them if they crashed in front of me because I had no brakes,” said Reed in victory lane.

Reed, who picked up his 4th win of the season after going winless until the last event of 2009 was elated to be having such good fortune on a night where so many had problems. “I don’t know what it is. The JEI car and the Kistler motor are working good and the crew is working good and the breaks are going our way. We shouldn’t have won this race…this thing is wounded..it’s not good at all. Just sometimes things go your way,” added Reed.

Mike Linder took early lead of the 410 feature, but then Sheldon Haudenschild, who was running second, Aaron Middaugh and Brian Smith spun bringing out the first caution. Then soon after, another caution flew for fourth place running Brian Lay and fifth place running Dean Jacobs who got together in turn 2.

On the lap 3 restart, Linder and outside first row starter Craig Mintz battled while 12th place starter Phil Gressman would drove to the front into third with Jody Keegan, Reed and Sebetto racing each other behind him. Another caution on lap five for a Matt Linder spin allowed Mintz pull his top wing all the way back blast under Linder for the lead on the restart. Gressman drove around Linder into second. Gressman and Mintz then traded sliders with Gressman taking the lead on lap 7. Gressman and Mintz put on a show for the fans while Linder tried to hold off 9th place starter Bryan Sebetto for third with Reed running fifth and coming on strong.

Reed drove under Sebetto and Linder to take over third as he was set to chase down the leaders. The caution would fly again for Haudenschild on lap 11 and on the restart it was a three-car battle for the lead but disaster struck as a broken driveline on Mintz’ car put an end to his night. On the restart it was Gressman, Reed, Sebetto, Jody Keegan, Brandon Martin, and Mark Keegan. Disaster would strike for Jody Keegan on lap 14 as his car jumped the cushion in turn three and flipped hard ending his run.

After another caution for Brian Smith who stopped on the back stretch, Sebetto got around Gressman in turn 2 for the lead. As Sebetto rocketed down the back stretch, Gressman moved up the track and Sebetto jumped his front wheel, sending Sebetto into a series of flips and ending Gressman’s night with a broken front end. Reed would inherit the lead with Martin in second, Mark Keegan in third, Brandon Wimmer in fourth and Dean Jacobs from the tail up to fifth.

The went the remaining 13 laps under green with Reed pulling away. The battle was for second between Martin, Keegan, Wimmer and Jacobs. Keegan got past Martin with a few laps remaining. Reed went on to victory with Keegan, Martin, Jacobs and Wimmer rounding out the Top 5.

In the 305 sprint feature, DJ Foos started on the front row and managed to hold off some pretty heavy hitters to get another win in 2010. After a lap 1 caution for a Dustin Dinan spin, Foos and Stuart Brubaker battled each other for the lead with Zack Kramer, Bobby Clark and Paul Weaver dicing in out for third. Clark stole third on lap 5 and drove around Brubaker into second on lap 7. Clark challenged Foos on the inside as the two caught the back of the field. Foos and Clark picked their way through traffic and continued to run nose to tail with Brubaker battling Weaver for third.

Brubaker spun on lap 15 as he raced hard into turn 2 ending his charge up front. The running order was now Foos, Clark, Weaver, Zack Kramer and Brad Haudenschild. Foos held off Clark on the restart with Weaver making it a three-car battle. Brad Haudenschild grabbed fourth as Weaver began pressuring Clark for second. Clark jumped the cushion on lap 23 in turn 4 and ended his challenge for another 305 win.

Foos was leading Weaver, Haudenschild and Nate Dussel on the restart. Foos drove back to the top with Weaver right on his tail. Weaver tried the slide job for the lead in turns one and two on the final lap, but Foos was able to drive back around the outside and take the win. Weaver, Haudenschild, Dussel and Paige Polyak would round out the Top 5.

“I kept looking at the big old scoreboard and saw Bobby and Weaver and I thought man I’ve got my work cut out for me know. I just had to keep driving harder and harder…these old guys are tough,” said Foos. “The high side in turns three and four were very tricky..there was a little bump going in and it got the car upset.”

Foos then pulled a #2 pill for the Kear's FAST Cash Bonus to give 2nd place Weaver an extra $100 in the Kear’s Speed Shop sponsored promotion. It was also Kear's Speed Shop Night at the track with several cash prizes going to the fans throughout the evening.
