Chase Billet Wins Late Model 40-Lapper on Saturday Night, July 4 at SSP; Thunberg and Horan Also Victory Lane Visitors
Newberrytown, PA (July 4, 2009) – Dover’s Chase Billet picked up his first career SSP feature win in the 40-lap Summer Fun Championship at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday Night, July 4. In other racing action, Scott Thunberg of Myerstown won his second straight Street Stock feature by claiming the 30-lap feature. Travis Horan of York also picked up his second straight in the Xtreme Stock feature as Dover’s Brent Hake won the XSC Rookie Rumble race. The PENNMAR feature was won by Fred Krickbaum.
In the 40-lap Late Model Summer Championship, Chase Billet grabbed the early lead from the pole position. Cam Zeigler, also looking for his first win of the season, had to relinquish his front row starting spot with mechanical failures before the drop of the green. From the start, Billet received heavy pressure from Justin Ehrhart who actually made a pass for the lead early on in the race, but Billet battled back quickly to stay in the top spot. Ehrhart, tryign everything he could, spun on lap 11, alowing Jake Jones to move into the runner-up spot. A few more cautions midway through the race allowed Jones to challenge, but not make the pass. After a lap 18 restart, the race went non-stop. Billet extended his lead throughout the latter stages of the race, but he eventually caught up to lapped traffic. This gave Jones the chance he needed as he closed up on Billet’s rear bumper. However, as soon as he did, Billet shot by the two lapped cars and never looked back to claim the victory. Billet is the 10th different feature winner in as many races at SSP in 2009. Jones settled for second, followed by Kyle Saylor, Gary Potts and Derrick Mease. Alex Updegraff and Travis McClelland picked up the heat race qualifiers.
Scott Thunberg grabbed the early lead in the 30-lap Street Stock Summer Championship with Jim Palm Jr. and Doug Bennett close behind. With a few caution periods in the first half of the race, the second half went without a stoppage. By this point, Dustin Hollinger moved into the runner-up spot to challenge Thunberg for the lead. Late in the race, Thunberg was able to pull away to claim his seond straight feature win at SSP. Holinger followed as the runner-up with Craig Morgan finishing third after he moved up from a ninth place starting spot. Garrett Shover finished fourth as Palm settled for fifth. Bennett and Palm won the heat races.
The 25-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature saw Travis Horan grabbing the lead early over a wild scramble for second between Tommy Slanker, Mike Zeigler Jr. and Sam Rial. With a limitd amount of cautions, the wheel-to-wheel action continued througout the entire event. Horan kept a small margin of distance from the battle and was able to collect his second straight feature event of the season at the end. A three wide battle coming off turn four on the final lap found Tommy Slanker claiming second followed by Zeigler and Rial the end. Andrew Frye rounded out the top five. Donnie Broderick and Zeigler claimed the heat races.
Fred Krickbaum collected the 12-lap PENNMAR Vintage Car feature event besting Glenn Pobletts and Larry Felty.
