Poole Wins Second
Motordrome Feature of ‘09 In Thrilling Duel
(Smithton, PA) For the second time in 2009,
Mark Poole of Eighty-Four, PA won the NASCAR Subway Super Late
Model feature at Motordrome Speedway – but only after a
paint-trading fight for the lead with Will Thomas. Other
winners in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series on July 3 were
Adam Kostelnik (Wyotech Modifieds), Shawn Phillips (Napa Street
Stocks), Larry Dunmyer (Coca Cola Super Compacts), and
first-time winner Victor Keller (Pro Auto Supply Service
Chargers).
The 50-lap NASCAR Subway Super Late Model
feature event started with a multi-car crash that forced a
restart before a single lap had been completed. Sophomore
driver Nathan Russell took and held the lead for one lap, until
former champion Garry Wiltrout took command of the event. On
lap seven, sixth-starter Will Thomas took the lead. Thomas, the
leading heat race winner, has yet to win a feature in 2009. He
was officially scored ahead until lap 40, and Mark Poole
challenged him inside, outside, and tapped his rear bumper.
Poole, after being involved in the opening lap accident, tagged
Thomas’ ride more than once, but each time backed off the
throttle to allow both cars to maintain control. Finally, with
ten laps to go, Thomas tried to close off the outside lane on
the backstretch and hit the concrete, ending his hopes of a win
with a broken rear end. Poole outran the rest of the field for
his second win of the season, and fourth in two years at
Motordrome, at the wheel of his Howard Concrete
Pumping/Donaldson Supply Chevrolet. Wiltrout was second with
his teammate Bobby Henry third after involvement in two caution
flag incidents. Points leader Mark Cottone was fourth after
being tagged in the first lap melee, and heat race winner Barry
Awtey was fifth. Dan Lewis won his first career heat race
earlier in the evening.
In the Wyotech Modified division, five-time
Champion Adam Kostelnik notched his fifth feature win of the
year. After starting twelfth, Kostelnik chased down race-long
leader Gary Scott to make his winning pass on lap 15. George
Nicola, the hard luck driver of 2009, rallied to a second place
finish after starting fifth. Previous week’s winner Bobby Shipp
placed third after starting ninth and Chris Brink was fourth.
Scott, after leading 14 laps, held on for a fifth place finish.
Kostelnik and Nicola won the preliminaries.
A stunning turn of events in the late stages
of the Napa Street Stock feature had fans cheering and jeering.
Veteran Mike Bakalon took the lead at the start, and
outdistanced defending champ Shawn Phillips, On lap 13, eighth
starter Jonathan Hileman took second and quickly reeled in
Bakalon. The leaders made contact a couple of times leading up
to a lap 23 slide, in which Bakalon and Hileman locked together
in a slide through turns three and four. Bakalon continued in
the lead and Hileman fell to third. Bakalon was black-flagged
for rough driving, making Phillips officially the leader and two
laps later, the winner for the third time in 2009. Hileman
finished second with Dink Colarusso third, Aaron Minjock fourth
and Tony Manganello fifth.
Division rookie Ed Shelpman led the first lap
of the Pro Auto Supply Service Chargers feature event, before
veteran Victor Keller took the lead. Roger Bryan held on to
second place until lap ten, when Victor’s brother Tracy Keller
became the runner-up. Former champion and heat winner Tracy
started twelfth, but could not catch Victor for another win.
Victor earned his first career victory by a couple of
car-lengths over his brother, with previous week’s winner Matt
Gardner in third, Ed McConnell fourth, and Roger Bryan fifth.
Ron Eifford, III won his first career heat race earlier in the
evening. Hileman and Colarusso won the heats.
Troy Knight
seemed poised for his first career Motordrome win in the Coca
Cola Super Compacts, as he took the lead from a fourth-place
starting berth. On lap twelve of 15, tenth-starting Larry
Dunmyer made a winning pass after a lengthy side-by-side
battle. Knight placed second with Eugene “Hillbilly” Zerfoss
third, Andres Suarez fourth after starting 14th, and
Paul Koffler, III completing the top five. Dunmyer and Phil
Wiltrout were the heat winners.
