SATTERLEE DOMINATES ULMS LATE MODELS AT MCKEAN COUNTY RACEWAY
E. Smethport, PA
The Northern Tier Inc. ULM S Late Model Series rolled back into McKean County Raceway for the twice rained out Nancy Bly / Hazen Jordan Memorial Thursday night. Rochester Mills, Pennsylvania hot shoe, Gregg Satterlee, “The Renegade” completely dominated the field leading the entire thirty lap event and easily capturing the $2000 prize money. David Scott of Garland, PA, Randy Hall of Olean, Arcade’s, Adam Ashcroft, Belfast, NY driver, Scott Derock and newcomer Joshua Beckstrom of Frewsburg were winners.
The Nancy Bly / Hazen Jordan Memorial was the main event of the night and Lakewood, New York’s John Volpe and Satterlee were the front starters. Volpe inherited the pole position when pole sitter, Jason Dupont’s car would not fire and make it to the lineup. After a complete restart for a false start, Satterlee immediately showed his muscle at the drop of John Powell’s green flag. With the opening lap in the books it was Satterlee already with a four car length advantage over Volpe and central Pennsylvania star, Luke Hoffner. Albion, PA driver, Dennis Lunger would move into third on the second lap, but Hoffner would come back to grab third on laps three and four. With five laps down it was Satterlee with a three quarter length of a straight away lead over Volpe and a fast moving Chad Valone now in third. Hoffner was fourth and current ULMS point leader and ninth place starter, Bob Close was now in fifth.
Valone would move into second on lap six as Satterlee was now hitting the lap traffic. Close would move into fourth on lap eight and take third from Volpe on lap nine. As the race hit lap ten, seventh place running Dennis Lunger’s machine would come to stop to bring out the first yellow. With the double file restart, this allowed Valone, Close, Dutch Davies to start right near Satterlee. It was a mute point as the #22 machine of Satterlee left his competitors behind. Valone and Close waged a torrid battle for second while tenth place running Mike Knight entered the top five at the halfway point. Dutch would get by close on lap eighteen as Valone separated himself a little bit while Satterlee was enjoying the sights around the MCR oval. Tim Steis would bring out the yellow on lap nineteen as he ended up in the turn 3 wall. Satterlee made it clear to Valone on the restart that it was his race as he just motored away. With ten to go, Brent Rhebergen grabbed fifth from his twelfth starting spot but that lasted only one lap as Knight came back to grab fifth. Satterlee led the final laps of the event and grabbed his second career Northern Tier Inc. ULMS feature and his second of three MCR wins in 2009 easily over Valone, Dutch Davies, Bob Close and Mike Knight. Rhebergen, Volpe, Greg Oakes, Doug Ricotta and Ron Davies rounded out the top ten.
The highly competitive Johnson Distributing Street Stocks didn’t disappoint the MCR faithful again. Adam Sixt and Rich Wojtowicz paced the field to the start with Wojtowicz leading the opening lap over Sixt. Kyle Bradigan would move into second on lap two with former track champion Chris Austin now in third. Austin would take second over on lap five as tenth place starter Rich Hemphill was now fourth and Jeff Hellwig in fifth. Adam Ashcroft would move into fifth on lap eight from his twelfth starting spot. At the halfway point, Ashcroft moved Hemphill back to fifth as the battle between Wojtowicz and Austin was heating up. The battle for the top five spots were so close the positions from third, fourth and fifth changed constantly. With five to go, Hemphill was now scored for third over Bradigan and Ashcroft. Ashcroft would grab fourth on lap 16 and take third from Hemphill with three to go using the extreme outside line. Ashcroft would take the lead with the white flag flying as Wojtowicz, Austin, Hemphill were all together. As Ashcroft and Austin raced down the back stretch for the final time it appeared Austin may come out on top, but Ashcroft would use the outside lane to hold on and pick up the win over Austin, Hemphill, Wojtowicz and Bradigan.
The Maynard’s’ Electric FASTRAK Late Models were up next. Veteran John Haggerty and Smethport’s Garrett Mott rolled down the front chute with Haggerty grabbing the lead. Haggerty would lead the first three laps till 2008 MCR champion, Max Blair would take the lead over from Haggerty. Twelfth place starting John Lacki was quickly into third on lap five while eleventh place starter, David “Slowride” Scott was in fourth with Kyle Zimmerman in fifth. Scott was definitely not in a “Slowride” as was now in second on lap eight. As the field hit the halfway point it was Blair, Scott, Haggerty, Lacki and Zimmerman the top five. Blair and Scott were hitting the lap traffic and on lap nineteen Slowride would go into the lead with Blair now in second. Lacki would grab second from Haggerty with three to go but at the line it was David “Slowride” Scott defeating the 2008 MCR champion, Max Blair. John Lacki, John Haggerty and Zimmerman completed the top five.
The Crosby Mart Emods saw the mighty six cylinder of Darren Tarabori and defending track champion and point leader, Randy Hall on the front row due to their redraw positions. Hall quickly motored in front of Tarabori at the start with Al Brewer in tow. Brent Rhebergen would grab third on lap three but Brewer would come back to grab the spot back one lap later. Rhebergen and Brewer had a contested battle with Rhebergen getting the third spot on lap six. Brewer would try the outside line and would end up sliding back to fifth as Dave Hess was now fourth. Hall was leading the way over Tarabori and Rhebergen. With the halfway point being reached, Tarabori would lose second to Rhebergen and on lap thirteen Dave Hess was now motoring to the front as he would dispose of Rhebergen for second on lap fourteen. Hall was checking out with five to go and Vic Vena was now in fifth. Hall would win his third straight at MCR with Hess coming home second over Rhebergen, Tarabori and Vic Vena in fifth.
John Ellwood and Mark Schweikert led the nine Wellsville NAPA Pure Stocks to the green flag. Ellwood would lead the opening lap but by lap two it was teenager, Blaine Krott quickly to the front. Ninth place starter, Scott Derock would grab the lead on lap three as Schweikert and Krott were going at it for second and third. Derock would lead the distance with Ellwood and Brad Curran coming home third.
The Wayne Paving Mini Stocks ended the Thursday Night Thunder program. Jim Galloway would grab the lead on the opening lap. Newcomer, Joshua Beckstrom would slip in second and hound Galloway for several laps allowing point leader, Steve Mowery to move through the field till he got to third. Beckstrom would grab the lead on lap eight as Mowery moved into second while Galloway night ended. Mowery and Beckstrom waged a clean competitive battle but at the end it was newcomer, Beckstrom dethroning Mowery’s two race dominance.
MCR will sit idle now again, till August 6 when the ULMS Late Models return for the 5th annual Stephanie Eckl Memorial. This will be the final tune up for the $12,000 to win ULMS Late Models Priority Care RaceFan 50 that will be held on September 25-26.
