George Skora III wins Lake Erie 150!

(North East, PA July 19, 2008)  The Lake Erie 150 presented by Dodge was promoted as one of the best Late Model events in the region, and the actual race proved to be just that.  With only a small rain delay, fans were treated to great “racing entertainment” at Lake Erie Speedway.

The first feature event was the Boyer RV Bandoleros, and starting at the front of the field for was #39 Blake Clabbatz, followed by #21 Alexis Wilson, #3 Zac Carter, #742 Nathan Carlson, and #42 Nathan Rodgers.  Clabbatz was not able to even lead the first lap before number Carter took over the first position.  Carter led the race to lap eleven when he collided with #42 Rodgers, flipping the #42.  After everyone was okay, and a little disagreement between #3 and #42, the race was restarted.  Taking first place after the caution was #742 Nathan Carlson from Erie, PA, second place went to # 81 Michael Walker, and third place went to #21 Alexis Wilson from Hamburg, NY.

Following the Bandoleros was the newest division to Lake Erie Speedways, the Dodge Sportmods.  Leading the field was #75 Bob Fisher, followed by #24 Randy Culver, #30 Chris Briggs, #11 Casey Swabik, and #28 Dale Murdock.  Without any cautions the Sportmods finished their twenty five lap race with a small battle between two previous winners, #32 Briggs and #21 Scott Bayle for first place.  #21, Bayle came out on top finishing first, with #32 Briggs finishing second, and #1 Terry Akerly finishing third.

The Jensens Target Collision Compacts led an almost perfect fifteen lap race.  Taking the poll for the race was #24B Brandon Huffman from Corry, PA.  For a few laps there was a first place battle between Huffman and #35 Jim Tobin.  The only caution came out on lap thirteen when #35 Tobin lost a tire.  Taking the lead out of the caution was #17M Rich Miller from Fredonia, NY, who also ended up taking first place and his first career win.  Taking second place was # 95 Jonathan Breads from Westfield, NY and taking third place was #7 Angela McAvoy from Fredonia, NY.

Next on the track were the Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks.  Leading the field was #55 Ken Moore Jr., followed by #84 Shawn Wood, #01 Leslie Bohrer, #5, Jay Queen, and # 99 Dennis Kszos.  Wood led the first two laps before #1 Terry Akerly took the lead for one lap.  Taking first from Akerly was #17 Erie Bohrer, the previous week’s winner. Caution came out on lap six by #99 Dennis Kszos, whose car caused a huge leak on the track, causing a long delay in the race.  Bohrer held on to first place for his second straight win and second career win at Lake Erie Speedway.  Finishing second was #21 Dave Wilson and finishing third was Akerly.

The Career Concepts Legends took the track for their forty-lap regional qualifier.   Would Justin Hines continue his winning streak with six straight wins?  With nineteen cars behind him, #8 Hines took the poll. With only two cautions in the race, Hines was able to lead most of the race until the end when #69 Jimmy Hensen from Cedar Lake, IN, let Hines know he was there. With a back and forth battle between Hines and Hensen it came down to a photo finish, with Hines winning by just inches of his bumper.  Henson took second, with #17 Chris Bailey Jr. taking third.  So for one more week Justin Hines will hold on to his amazing win streak.

The last race of the night was the Lake Erie 150 presented by Dodge that featured twenty nine Late Models.  Taking the poll was #45 Rick Boyer; followed by #99s John Sandquist Jr., #55 Matt Barndt, #9 Will Thomas, and #3 Jeff Brown.  Within the first fifty laps three cautions came out with one coming out on lap fifty caused by debris between turns three and four.  With the cars bunched together positions were constantly changing.  Position for first place changed between #99 Tim Card who led the first four laps, which was taken by #45 Rick Boyer who led laps five through thirty.  Boyer lost his first place position to #9 Will Thomas who then battled for first with #65 George Skora III. After a mandatory pit stop on lap seventy-eight racing got back under way. After six more cautions and many lead changes, #65 George Skora III, from Eden, PA took first place. Finishing second was #24 Dave Rigan from Clarence Center, NY, and third place went to #9 Will Thomas from Sharpsville, PA.  Each driver thanked their crew, sponsors, and family and friends for all their hard work and support.

The Lake Erie 150 presented by Dodge showcased the great racing talent in the Plyler Overhead Door Late Models, and the race night ended with an awesome fireworks show sponsored by Aaron’s.
