at Stateline Speedway
By Glenn Slocum
Busti, NY: Tobber Racing sponsored the evening's events at Stateline Speedway
which along with racing in all six divisions included the Tim Chitwood Thrill
Show and an Outlaw Cadet Championship race. Louis DeDionisio won the
Championship race from his twelfth starting spot taking the lead from Jamie
Erhard with five laps remaining. Dan Armbruster lost the lead to David
Scott late in the Super Late Modelevent then fought back to win by a car length
at the finish. Nate Lester led from lap two of theSpectator feature
to win his second of the season. Don McGuire moved from third to first in
the last corner to win the Budweiser Super Sportsman event. It was yellow flag
fever in the E-Mod feature as Dale Applebee won his fifth after surviving
ninecautions. Ryan Scott and Chuck Dickinson won the Super Challenger features.
Twenty-seven Super Late Models reported to the speedway for their feature event
with Dan Armbruster and Paul Briggs on the frontrow. Scott Johnson and
Moose Dunnewold were in the second row followed by Scott Gurdak and Dick Barton.
Chad Valone spun in turn two on the initial lap collecting Kevin Weise and Steve
Halpainy. All the cards involved in the incident were able to continue. It was
Armbruster, Briggs and Johnson at the end of the first lap then Briggs lost
several spots and Johnson moved into second followed by Barton and David Scott
in Rod Maloy's car. Gurdak was fifth. Johnson moved up under Armbruster on lap
seven but could not make the pass and Scott began pressing Barton. Scott won the
battle for third with nine complete. Armbruster caught the rear of the field on
lap twelve with Johnson three car lengths behind. Dunnewold stopped near the pit
entrance for the second yellow of the event with thirteen laps complete.
Armbruster led followed by Johnson, Scott, Barton, Gurdak, Rich Gardner and Dave
Hess Jr. Johnson beat Armbruster into turn one then Armbruster fought back as
the yellow flew for Don Jackson, Ward Schell and Kevin Weise. Armbruster held
onto the led on the restart and Scott passed Johnson for the runner up spot.
Doug Eck slowed on the speedway bringing out the caution with fifteen complete.
The leaders were Armbruster, Scott, Johnson, Barton, Gardner and Dave Lyon in
the George LaBarbera car. Wally Fox and Brady Wonderling brought out the caution
on the next lap after the restart. Scott moved Armbruster up the speedway on lap
nineteen to get the bottom groove but the yellow flew once more for Fox in turn
two and Armbruster was placed back in front. Lyon had gained a spot over Gardner
and sat in fifth spot for the restart. Scott had a nose on Armbruster at the end
of lap twenty and the yellow appeared for Dunnewold in turn four. Scott was now
the leader followed by Armbruster, Johnson, Barton, Lyon and Gardner. Armbruster
led Scott by a foot as the two to go was given then a half a car length under
the white flag then a full car length as the checkers fell.
Scott Lewis and Troy Dorman were on the front row for Outlaw Cadet Championship
race with Eugene Bevil and Wayne Mohawk were in row two. Lewis led the first lap
but Bevil spun in turn four for the first yellow. Lewis and Dorman remained on
the front row for the lap two restart with Mohawk third and Mark Hall fourth.
Paul Norman was pushed into the pits during the yellow. It was Lewis, Mohawk,
Jamie Erhard and Louis DeDionisio after the restart. The yellow flew with six
laps complete for Andy Knight. The restart failed with Andy Knight stopped in
turn four. Erhard gained the second spot on the restart with DeDionisio third
and Mohawk slipping back to fourth. Erhard caught Lewis one lap later and passed
for the lead dragging DeDionisio along as Lewis slipped to third. Alex Feisler
spun with twelve complete. Erhard remained the leader with DeDionisio second
Lewis third and Mike Moore in fourth. One more lap was completed when the yellow
flew for Andy Loomis in turn four. Phil Knight passed Lewis for fourth after the
restart. Erhard slowed in turn four and Andy Loomis made hard contact with the
backstretch wall bringing out the caution with fifteen laps complete. DeDionisio
was the new leader as Erhard retired followed by Moore and Phil Knight. Neither
Moore nor Knight could move up to challenge DeDionisio who went on to win the
event for his first win of the season.
Chris Kuschel led the first lap of the Budweiser Super Sportsman feature with
Will Wanstreet second and Don Nocero third. Wanstreet faded on lap four as
Nocero and Don McGuire moved into second and third. The leaders ran nose
to tail until the two to go signal when Don McGuire moved by Nocero for the
second spot and after making contact with Nocero in turn four the yellow
appeared. Nocero was placed back into second on the restart and Bryan Ester
climbed the front stretch wall bringing out the yellow right after the
green. Nocero retired during the yellow so the top three for the restart were
Wanstreet, Don McGuire and Pete Volpe. Volpe gained the second spot on the
restart putting Don McGuire back into third as the white flag came out. Volpe
gained the top spot in turn three then nearly spun coming down for the
checkers giving Don McGuire the win.
Skip Joslin and Justin Tatlow were on the front row of the Spectator feature.
Joslin led lap one but Tatlow slipped back a couple of spots then suddenly
veered into the turn four fence to bring out the caution as lap one ended.
Joslin was the leader with Nate Lester second, Chris Couchenour third and John
Swabik fourth. Lester was the new leader on lap two and the yellow reappeared
for Jeff Burger on the backstretch. Swabik was second with Joslin third and
Couchenour fourth. John Kelsey moved by Joslin for fourth on lap four then make
contact with Couchenour and lost several spots. Brian Wagner and Joslin brought
out the caution after an incident in turn four. Lester was still the leader with
Swabik second and Kelsey third. Rick Thompson used the restart to gain the third
spot placing Kelsey in fourth. Lester continued to lead and the yellow appeared
with six laps completed for Pat Landy who had stopped on the front straight.
Kelsey regained the third spot from Thompson on the restart as the top four
began to separate themselves from the rest of the field. With ten laps completed
the yellow appeared for David McClanahan who had lost a rear wheel. The restart
was waved off by Spanky Hall but the next attempt was successful and
Thompson gained two spots as the white flew for Lester. Lester held on for the
win with Thompson second.
Chad Ruhlman used his pole starting spot to gain the lead on the first lap of
the E-Mod feature. The yellow appeared for Shane Applebee and Joe Buccola as the
first lap ended. Ruhlman remained the leader after the restart with Chris Sutton
second and Dale Applebee third. Tom Hagberg and Buzz Phearsdorf tangled on lap
three for the second yellow. Mike Munsee got sideways on the restart collecting
Greg Johnson, Troy Carr, K.C. Decker and Hagberg. Ruhlman struggled on the
restart but the yellow appeared for Buccola before the lap was complete. Ruhlman
had a flat left rear and left the speedway placing Sutton in first
followed by Applebee and Tommy Fox. Dave Hess Jr. was fourth and Dan Nocero
fifth. Bill Thomas also went to the pits with a flat during the caution. The
restart was foiled when Jim Irwin spun on the back stretch. Dave Hess Jr. spun
on the next restart collecting several cars including Tommy Fox who had been
running third. Applebee beat Sutton to turn one to gain the top spot then the
yellow appeared for Phearsdorf. Matt Swanson spun while running second with six
laps complete for the seventh caution. Tommy Fox tagged Dave Hess on lap
nine putting Hess hard into the fence on the front straight and Hess left the
speedway on the hook. The leaders on the restart were Applebee, Nocero and
Mohawk. Two laps later the ninth caution flew for Swanson who had spun in
turn four. Two laps remained after the restart and Applebee ran unchallenged to
win his fifth of the year.
