Montgomery wins Tecumseh 30
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO- Jackson, Ohio's Racin' Jason
Montgomery has become K-C's Mr. Invitational of sorts, winning a
couple big features this 2011 season and Saturday night's $2,000 to
win "Tecumseh 30" at Jeff and Vicki Schrader's K-C Raceway. Success
has come at a price, however, as several early K-C excursions ended
in major repairs. Saturday, Montgomery continued his rise to
prosperity after fending off Salt Rock, WV driver Eddie Carrier, Jr.
who was there every inch of the race.
Jamey Adams, Laurelville, OH, has been rewriting the record books as a K-C legend with another win in the Hobby Stocks. Derek Davis came from last to first to claim the 15-lap RWD Four -Cylinder main, while Kevin Roberts, Jr. scored the big win in the AMSA Mini-Sprint main. Despite pulling into victory lane with a flat tire, Montgomery--visibly excited and winded-- said in victory lane, "Wow, it got a little hairy out there at times in lapped traffic and I thought, 'Oh no, I've seen this before', but everyone got spread out and the car just kept hookin up on the high side." "I'd like to thank my help and sponsors of this Rocket Chassis/Estes Engines car, and all those who support me every week. We had some bad luck last week, and these guys (crew) put this car back together-- and wow it was great." Traditionally, "The Tecumseh" has been a sprint car event, but the management team of K-C strategically switched the venue to a late model event. The result was a stout field of cars featuring many champions from across the area. The stage was set on the redraw with Montgomery and an other big-race winner Carrier, two of the top guns, drawing pills one and two. Montgomery got the early jump and Carrier quickly responded in tow. Although Montgomery went green-to-checkered, Carrier made the race exciting, especially with several low dives alongside the eventuall winner. With Carrier pursuing possible slide jobs from the lower rung, Montgomery had the momentum on the super quick high side. Off the track they are father-son, but on the track one of the night's most heated battles was a race-long fight between Rod Conley and Hall of Fame father Delmas Conley. For 30-laps the duo battle hard much to the delight of the fans. Mike Wilson, Mark Frazier, and Dusty Campbell had a great battle going for a top five, but Campbell fell off the pace with mechanical woes. Wilson notched another great K-C run into fifth with Frazier close behind. Both Montgomery and Carrier lapped all cars up to seventh place Audie Swartz. Another notable in the event John Whitney edged up-and-coming Dylan Huron and Josh Bivens who had a strong night racing into the top ten. Bivens raced from 16th to 10th as the hard charger of the race. Rounding out the top ten were Montgomery, Carrier, Jr., Rod Conley, Delmas Conley, Mike Wilson, Mark Frazier, Audie Swartz, John Whitney, Dylan Huron, and Josh Bivens. In the 20-lap 'Arrowhead 20' Mr. Victory himself Jamey Adams, once again prevailed in his "old car". Brandon Mather led early to lap 8, but the Chillicothe police officer couldn't cuff the competition this time. Adams for a time rode comfortably in fourth behind Evan Seitz and Billy Crabtree. Seitz gave Mather an early run for the money. Brandon Thompson, the rising young gun, battled with Bruce Gray, Jr., Gary Park and Jim Hildebrand. Following a couple cautions, Adams stepped up to the plate and began his charge, taking over for good on lap 9. Although it wasn't a run-away the rest of the pack couldn't produce the speed to overtake the defending champ. Bruce Gray, Jr. was on the move around the inside rail, picking off cars at a regular clip in a great run to the co-hard charger award. His partner as co-hard charger was Jim Hildebrand, who made a kamakazee blitz in turn three around two cars; a move that sealed second for the gutsy driver. Rounding out the top ten were Adams, Hildebrand, Gray, Jr., Mather, Brandon Thompson, Evan Seitz, Gary Park, Mike Brust, Jack Martin, Sr., and Tim Cutler. Adams said in victory lane, " Thanks to Jeff Schrader and the track crew for giving us a great race track to race one. Once again Thank you to everyone who supports us and helps get us here. Right now we are just enjoying the ride and having fun." Kevin Roberts, Jr. came and he conquered in the 20-lap AMSA Mini-Sprint main. The all-Roberts reunion saw Nick Roberts in second, but the family picnic was interrupted by third place Ryan Broughton, Rod Henning, and Greg Nicholas who pushed Kevin Roberts, Sr. back to a respectable sixth. Tim Ashworth, T.J. Heil, Justin Owens and Trey Gustin also had good runs. Gustin recovered from an early spin to the top ten. Said young Roberts, "My Dad and brother race me hard and that just makes me better," said Kevin Roberts. "We enjoy coming here, and this Henchcraft Chassis really hooked up tonight." Rounding out the line-up were Kevin Roberts, Nick Roberts, Ryan Broughton, Rod Henning, Greg Nicholas, Kevin Roberts, Sr., Tim Ashworth, T.J. Heil, Justin Owens, Trey Gustin, Eric Semple, Mark Smith, Chris Smalley, Alex Watson, and Todd Willis. Derek Davis suffered disappointment in the 6-lap RWD Four Cylinder heat. As a result, Davis had to start scratch in the feature. Davis turned tragedy to triumph with an exciting last-to-first run, passing then leader Todd Irvin with just under two laps to go. Steve Cruse was the early leader, then Irvin took over. James Ball and Billy Young had good runs going, but the fastest car at one point was the oncoming Randy Baker, who dashed from next to last to third before going pit side. Rounding out the top ten were race hard charger and winner Derek Davis, Todd Irvin, James Ball, Billy Young, Randy Johnson, Adam Haynes, Nathan Johnson, Matt Gray, Keith Elliott, and Randy Baker. K-C is idle this coming Labor Day weekend, but returns in a big way Sept. 10 for the annual "Freedom 40" for the All-Star Circuit of Champion sprint cars. In an effort to pack the stands for one of racing's most prestigious open wheel races, K-C promoter Jeff Schrader is charging the standard $12 General Admission for all fans. Said Schrader, "This is typically an $18-$20 admission to see the outlaw sprints from the All-Star Circuit of Champions. If you haven't seen a sprint car race, especially some of the best in the business (including Knoxville Nationals 2010 Champ Tim Shaffer), then this is a great opportunity. If you are a race fan, you know it is a bargain. Sprint cars and K-C Raceway create excitement very few tracks can make claim to." Also on the race card are the powerful AMRA Modifieds and hard-charging K-C Hobby Stocks. K-C has added Late Models to the October 1 racing program. This will give the late model and modified drivers their last chance to race on KC before the DTWC. There will be no BOSS sprints this night. While plans are in the works for more Road Warrior Challenge modified races, the races that remain currently on the AMRA National schedule are Sat. Sept 17th at Skyline Speedway, Stewart, Ohio (Harvest 50 Weekend) and Sat. Oct 1st at K-C Raceway in Chillicothe, Ohio as a Warm-up for Dirt Track World Championship. The Dirt Track World Championship is Oct. 13-14-15 paying $50,000 to win for Late Models and $3,000 to win for Modifieds. For More Information visit www.kc-raceway.com or call 740-663-4141.
