Larry Wight Wins First Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature Narrowly Holding Off Jimmy Phelps At The Fulton Speedway FULTON, NY – August 27, 2011(By Dave Medler) – Coming into Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway, Larry Wight had come close on many occasions to picking up his first ever Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature win at the track, only to have it slip away late in the going. Saturday night, Wight put it all together, taking the lead on lap 12 from Roy Bresnahan. Once in the lead Wight had to hold off first, Billy Decker, then an all-out push from Jimmy Phelps on the final lap to pick up the popular win. Other winners on Tenacious Racing, Universal Metal Works Night were, Bob Henry Jr. SUNY Canton Sportsman, Tim Sears Jr. Go Nuclear Late Model Series, Doug Williams Mod Lites, Tony Finch II E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and Jerry Herbert Four Cylinder Stocks. Shane Donath would lead the first 2 laps of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature before Roy Bresnahan in his GM CT 525 would take over the top-spot. On lap 4 the caution would fly for Jimmy Phelps who got turned around exiting turn two. Phelps, coming into the race was only two points behind Billy Decker in the point standings. On lap 10 there was a wild scramble at the front of the field. You could have thrown a blanket over Matt Hulszier, Alan Johnson, Roy Bresnahan, Larry Wight and Chris Hile just before a caution for Johnson who suddenly broke ending his night. On lap 12 Larry Wight made a daring move on the top of the speedway, finding just enough room and speed to go from fourth place and shoot into the lead. By lap 15, Wight and teammate Billy Decker separated themselves from the field as they ran nose to tail and side by side for the top spot. Hulsizer, Hile and Jimmy Phelps made his way back from the rear of the field showed in the top-five. Not only was there a race going on for the lead, but eyes were on the top two in the points when Decker suddenly slowed while running third on lap 21 as he headed to the pits with mechanical problems. With 10 laps to go Wight, still running the cushion was able to hold off Phelps while Pat Ward, Hulsizer and Hile raced for top-five spots. It looked like all Wight had to do over the final laps was contend with back-markers and put them a lap down, as he was able to keep equal distance between himself and Phelps, that was till the final lap. With Wight running the top of the speedway, Phelps only had one place to go try and grab the win, that was the bottom. Going into turn three, Phelps tossed his car to the bottom as he pulled even with Wight. Exiting turn four, Wight and Phelps were side by side for the drag race to the checkers. Wight running the top never flinched as he was the first under the checkers by a slim 0.198 of a second over Phelps. Pat Ward, Matt Hulsizer and Ryan Phelps finished third through fifth. Chris Hile, Jim Witko Jr., Chad Phelps, Mike Bowman and Mike Mahaney completed the top-ten. “I knew I had a good car at the beginning, we were a little too good at the beginning. So I knew I had to take my time and not burn up my tire on the top. When I got to lapped traffic I slowed down and tried to use them to block for me,” said Larry Wight after parking his Gypsum Express, Tracey Road Equipment, NAPA, Stadium International Trucks, Syracuse Haulers, No.99L, Bicknell in victory lane. “There was a really big patch up brown up there; it seems nobody was hitting it quite yet because it was so far up there. On those restarts, you were able to keep your momentum up down the front stretch. I ended up getting along Roy (Bresnahan) he gave me just enough room,” Wight said about his winning pass on lap twelve. “We came from mid-pack and had a good car, it was a legit win for us.” Going into the final points night, Jimmy Phelps leads Billy Decker by 21 points. In the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Ben Wheeler looked to be heading for his first ever Fulton Speedway win till a late yellow put Bob Henry Jr. on Wheeler’s back bumper. On the final lap going into turns one and two, Henry pulled a classic slide job on Wheeler to grab the lead and the win. Jeremy Pitcher, Tim Schneider and Andrew Ferguson finished third through fifth. Dale Caswell, Aaron Jacobs and Tim Sears Jr. battled at the front of the pack in the early going of the 25 lap Go-Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series race. Sears took the lead on lap 9 and was the class of the field till a late yellow put Larry Wight on his back bumper with one lap to go. On the final lap Sears was able to hold off Wight for the narrow win. Dale Caswell, AJ Kingsley and Gus Schmidt rounded out the top-five. The Fulton Speedway would like to thank all the Late Model drivers who went out and bought bikes for the Junior Fan Club bike giveaway on the front straight during intermission. Tony Finch Jr. was once again the class of the field in the E&V Energy Novice Sportsman,as he picked up his fifth win of the year. CJ Catelletti, Ron Davis III and Kris VanNorstrand chased Finch across the line. Doug Williams grabbed his sixth win of the season in the Mod Lites. Rick Demo, Jamie King, Jeff Isabell Jr. and Jim Bogett finished third through fifth. Jerry Herbert retuned to victory lane in the 15 lap Four Cylinder Stock feature over, Keith Zirbel, Eric M Zirbel, Josh Zirbel and Matt Dawson.
