Saturday nite saw clear skies and a nice
crowd, as Hummingbird Speedway got the show under way with five
divisions taking to the track. Special thanks go out to Ralston/Maines
Motorsports for providing Saturday’s trophies in memory of Frank
Maines.
With the Prontock Beer Distributor Rear
Wheel Drive Four Cylinders taking the track for the first feature of
the night, Alan Barnett of Philipsburg took the early lead. A lap
six caution eliminated the cars of Don Henry and polesitter Randy
Albert. Barnett took control and was followed to the checkered flag
by Bob Ralston Jr., Mike Anderson. John Bowser, and Todd English.
The Street Stocks took to the track next
for an exciting, although caution marred event. Polesitter Gary
Little of Woodland, and Sykesville’s Bob Rosman sped away from the
pack in the early laps. A lap eight caution sent the cars of Mike
Miller and Allen English to the pits , On the restart Rosman took
the lead and held Little off until another caution on lap ten
sidelined the cars of Dan Gill and Bill Huntington. In the late laps
of the race Rosman and Little battled for the lead, at the line
Rosman prevailed over Little, Bob Connor, Joe Kot, and Tim Steis.
John Chesnalavich Jr. of Reynoldsville
led the Brookville Wood Products / BWP Bats Limited Late Models to
the line with Falls Creek driver Bruce Raybuck on the outside pole.
Early cautions for Bob McMillen and Denny Fenton tightened the
field, and kept the leaders in check . Frenchville’s Eric Moore
worked his way to the front, taking the lead from Chesnalavich on
lap ten, and proceeding to run away and hide for the win. The top
five at the stripe were Moore, Chesnalavich Jr, Derek Rodkey, Paul
Kot, and Rich Womeldorf.
The Miller Brothers Furnoture Pure
Stocks were next on the raceway with Jason Bainey of Philipsburg
flanked by Kane’s Ben Asel on the front row. Bainey led the early
laps, until a lap nine caution erased his lead and sent Kyle Shannon
to the pits. The lap ten restart saw Billy Mumau of Rossiter take a
hard a hard hit into the turn four wall, a lengthy red flag period
followed as track and safety personnel attended to the incident.
Mumau was transported to DRMC for observation, further details on
his condition were not available at press time. In the late stages
of the race Bainey held off the hard charging Brian Rhed of
Brockport, to take the checkered flag. Jerry Walls of Sykesville and
Ben Asel followed to the stripe,
The evening’s final feature had Front
Wheel Drive Four Cylinder drivers Brett Fields and Todd English on
the front row. English took the early lead, only to be overtaken by
Fields on lap eight. Rounding out the top five were Russ Colwell of
Knox, Mike Lucas of Centre Hall, and Stephen Bouch of Reynoldsville.
